Vernika Dunbar, the half-sister of reality TV personality Mackayla “Kash” Paige who is accused of accidentally shooting and killing her two weeks ago, has been released from jail with an ankle monitor and was able to attend Paige's funeral.
The 38-year-old woman who's been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her half-sister was released from jail last week, as Bay Area News Group reports. Vernika Dunbar of Berkeley was fitted with an ankle monitor at an October 21 court appearance, and she has been ordered to remain in her home except to go to work or seek mental health care.
She was also permitted to attend the funeral of half-sister Mackayla “Kash” Paige, a 29-year-old Richmond resident who appeared on the reality shows Real West Coast Baddies, Young and Reckless, and Room H8's
Dunbar was seen in now widely circulated video coming to the defense of Paige on the morning of October 11, after Paige engaged in a physical fight with a third woman on the sidewalk outside Oakland nightclub Cave. In an apparent attempt to break up the fight and assault the other woman, Dunbar can be seen striking her with a pistol, at which point the gun reportedly went off and shot Paige in the head. Paige is then seen lying motionless on the sidewalk.
As Bay Area News Group reports, the third woman, who had just been ejected from the nightclub, remains unidentified and Oakland police are still seeking her for questioning.
Dunbar has been charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as with the assault of the third woman.
Kash's was the second Bay Area death in the span of a week associated with the Baddies franchise or its offshoots. A spiritual successor to Bad Girls Club, Baddies features a predominantly African American female cast engaging in a fair amount of physical conflict in public and private settings. Real West Coast Baddies, featuring Kash, was an offshoot of that franchise, on the streaming only Nyx Network.
Baddies USA was shooting an episode at The Warfield in San Francisco on October 3 when an apparent pepper-spray incident inside the venue led to a stampede out the front exit, where security guard Ulysses Tykee Davis was fatally shot.
